The Los Angeles Chapter of CAMFT Services Information Page
Marriage and Family Therapists in California are specifically licensed and trained to offer one or more of the following types of services. MFT's are relationship specialists. This includes not only one's relationship with others but also one's relationship with oneself. (See What is an MFT?)
MFT's traditionally provide both short- and long-term help with a wide variety of issues and concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, life adjustment problems, personality disorders and more.
MFT's work with couples in all areas of concern for a relationship, including: Pre-marital, marital, separation, divorce, business and domestic partnerships.
MFT's provide support and therapy for family problems that require the attention and involvement of two or sometimes even three generations to promote resolution.
Many MFT's use a group setting for individuals, couples, and even families to provide support, insight, and modeling for problem resolution. See our Group Offerings page for current listings.
Some MFT'S offer coaching as part of their practice. The goals of coaching are different than therapy in that they focus on defining, motivating and helping individuals mobilize their personal and professional resources for work-related growth goals.
Some MFT'S are specially trained to respond immediately to people in communities where severe trauma has occured, such as a natural disaster, airplane or train accidents, school or work shootings, or other forms of violence. Often a team of therapists is sent to counsel survivors of tragedy and those who have witnessed devastating events.
MFT's provide invaluable assistance to businesses of all sizes, as well as schools and other public institutions, to help with a variety of relationship issues and concerns for employees and management. Many MFT's work in Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and/or have specialties in organizational psychology.
