Identifying and Treating Impostor Syndrome

Stevon Lewis, LMFT

Individuals who suffer from Impostor Syndrome are usually high achievers in some facet of their life, whether it be in their career, in education, or in the arts. Often, they present to therapy expressing self-doubt, feelings of not living up to their potential, or reporting a history of self-sabotage resulting in diagnosable disorders of depression or anxiety. This presentation will focus on helping clinicians identify Impostor Syndrome and effective ways to address the rigidly held beliefs sufferers hold that prevent them from connecting to the parts of themselves responsible for their success.

Educational Goal:

To help clinicians recognize clients presenting with signs of Impostor Syndrome and to develop effective treatment plans to assist their clients in reaching their goals. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify two key principles to support and assist BIPOC clients in a safe therapeutic environment.
  2. Utilize six specific tools to provide Allyship and understand implicit bias, microaggressions and how to avoid them.
  3. Understand and identify three principals of “Racial Invisibility” and how to eliminate it in therapeutic settings.

Stevon Lewis, LMFT, is a speaker, author, and host of the podcast “How to Talk to High Achievers About Anything” produced by LWC Studios. In his private practice, he specializes in working with professionals who struggle with Impostor Syndrome. He has been a featured expert on major television and media platforms, including the Oprah Winfrey Network, KevOnStage Studios, Bustle, Thrive Global, and Entrepreneur. Stevon has facilitated discussions about Impostor Syndrome, race, and mental health concerns in the workplace for Tory Burch, Scotch Porter, The Creative Collective NYC, Deluxe Media, The Blackbird House, and A New Direction, a London-based nonprofit that provides support and development to individuals from communities that are underrepresented in the creative and digital industries.
