The Deep End: Treating OCD with Exposure

Adriana Diaz, LCSW

This presentation focuses on the identification and treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in clinical settings. Participants will learn how to distinguish obsessions from compulsions (including mental compulsions aka “pure O”), common OCD themes, and sub-categories of OCD that are often overlooked or misdiagnosed. Information and examples on how ERP works to create changes in behavior as well as how exposure sessions are conducted will be provided.

Educational Goal:

Understand the nature of OCD and how ERP is used to treat this condition. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Assess examples of obsessions and compulsions and identify OCD in a clinical setting.
  2. Identify the “OCD cycle.”
  3. Explain how ERP disrupts the OCD cycle and creates change through learning.
  4. Specify how an exposure hierarchy and SUDS are utilized in OCD treatment.

Adriana Diaz, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker with 12 years of experience in various clinical settings including eating disorder clinics, non-profits, Kaiser Permanente, and private practice. Adriana is a passionate supporter and practitioner of cognitive behavioral methods and utilizes CBT and exposure therapy (ERP) to treat eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and OCD. Adriana completed general and advanced ERP training through The International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) as well as training from the TLC institute in the comprehensive model for behavioral treatment (ComB).
