"What Are You?”:
Considerations for Therapy with Mixed-Race Clients
Leanne Nettles, LMFT
In 2020, the population of mixed-race individuals in the US is higher than ever before, and exponentially growing. In this population, there are unique challenges when integrating one’s personal and social identity. This workshop will introduce you to history and themes of mixed-race identity development to consider when assessing and treating clients with a mixed-racial background.
Learning Objectives:
- To learn the difference between race, ethnicity, culture, and nationality when exploring mixed-race identity.
- To understand basic history, laws, and social factors which have influenced mixed-race identity development in the US.
- To understand common themes in assessing and treating clients who identify as mixed-race.
Presenter:
Leanne Nettles, LMFT, is passionate toward working with disenfranchised populations, and currently works as a Clinical Supervisor at D’Veal Family and Youth Services. Growing up mixed-race, Leanne has also experienced many facets of multi-racial identity development. Leanne hopes to improve understanding and culturally-competent therapeutic practice with mixed-race individuals and families.
