Financial Therapy:
What is It and How Can It Help Your Clients?

Dr. Megan McCoy & Dr. Alex Melkumian

Financial Therapy is a relatively new field combining therapeutic and financial competencies. Financial problems are the top reported stressor in Americans' lives and a leading cause of divorce, yet many family therapists are hesitant to explore finances. This presentation will explore why it is essential to bring up money in therapy, potential obstacles to introducing financial therapy, and tangible tools you can start using immediately to explore the intersection between finances and overall health with your clients and for yourself.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Define financial therapy practice and historical underpinnings
  2. Identify the justification for exploring finances in the therapy room
  3. Distinguish between financial professions to make appropriate referrals or collaborations when necessary
  4. Apply the trauma egg and genogram interventions to financial conversations and content.

Megan McCoy, Ph.D., LMFT, CFT-I™, is a Professor of Practice and the Director of the Personal Financial Planning Master’s Program at Kansas State University. Her research has been published in a range of journals such as The Journal of Financial Therapy, The Journal of Financial Planning, The Journal of Family Economic Issues, and Family Relations to name a few. Dr. McCoy serves as Secretary for the Board of Financial Therapy. In addition, she is the Associate Editor of Profiles and Book Reviews for the Journal of Financial Therapy

Alex Melkumian, Psy.D, LMFTAs the founder of Financial Psychology Center in Los Angeles, Dr. Melkumian is devoted to helping clients improve their financial health by uncovering psychological patterns that keep them stuck and suffering. Working with individuals, couples, and athletes, he provides therapeutic tools to help heal financial anxiety by addressing maladaptive behaviors rooted in financial fear.
