Gender, Power, and Global Social Justice:
The Healing Power of Psychotherapy

Dr. Manijeh Daneshpour, LMFT

This presentation makes a serious attempt to cover issues related to gender, power, and global social justice. It includes a balanced perspective about men's and women's relational experiences within different cultures' ecological contexts. The current socio-political climate in the US and complex issues related to gender, power, and privilege have created a serious void in the psychotherapy field of dealing with men's and women's relational challenges. This presentation discusses why, as mental health professionals, we cannot stay neutral in the face of political movements that challenge our progress toward equality and are adversarial to the human vision that underlies psychotherapeutic principles.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Determine how the healing power of psychotherapy can be utilized to help explore gendered experiences within the global context.
  2. Identify how privileging client voices, promotes justice in gendered relationships and allows us to de-pathologize symptoms.
  3. Explore the impact of socio-political issues in therapeutic practice.
