Cults 101: Understanding and Treating Cult-Involved Clients/Families, Coercive Control, and Manipulation

Dr. Doni Whitsett, PhD, LCSW, MFT

With the explosion of conspiracy theories in the news and on social media there has been a resurgence of interest in the phenomenon of cults, aka “high demand” or “high control” groups. Why do intelligent people “join” them, why do they stay even in the face of abuse, and why do they leave? This presentation will shed light on these enigmatic questions, helping the participant understand cult psychology, coercive control and manipulation. The presentation will also focus on recognizing post-cult trauma and learning the most effective treatment interventions.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand three reasons people are attracted to cults, including conspiracy theories.
  2. Identify the reasons people remain in cults.
  3. Determine effective treatment modalities and issues in working with cult survivors.

Doni Whitsett, PhD, LCSW, MFT, is a Fulbright scholar and a Clinical Professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work where she teaches courses focused on neurobiology, trauma, and sexuality. As a psychotherapist in private practice she has been working with cult-involved clients and their families for over 25 years. She has presented to professional audiences both nationally and internationally in Australia, Canada, France, Poland, and Spain. Her latest publications include chapters on “A modern psychodynamic approach to working with 1st generation cult survivors” and “Global violence of women in cults.”
