The Gifts of a Life Review:
Exploring the Lived and Unlived Life with Clients 50+

Connie Zweig, Ph.D.

The traditional life review is a well-known tool for people 50+ who wish to recall memories, release conflicts, and find forgiveness. Presenter Connie Zweig describes this as the ego's life review, the story that is consciously lived. But we know from psychology that the personal unconscious, or Shadow, carries its own stories. This presentation will demonstrate how to add the dimension of Shadow to bring a deeper perspective to this tool. We will explore how to connect what was expressed in an individual life with what was repressed and unlived. By adding this aspect to the Life Review, the unlived life moves into conscious awareness, and people can reclaim some of what was sacrificed—lost dreams, talents, and opportunities for reconciliation and healing.  At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the difference between a traditional life review and a review of the unlived life, and how the latter can be utilized for yourself and in working with clients.
  2. Understand how to identify and explore feelings, traits, talents or dreams buried in your/your clients' Shadow.
  3. Explore and utilize the four dimensions of a life review - body, mind, heart, and spirit for you/your clients.
  4. Determine how the three gifts of a life review (reframing your/your client's life story, identifying people/events that shaped you/your clients and, determining where emotional and/or spiritual repair is required) can help, in working with aging clients, to prepare for death without regret.

Connie Zweig, Ph.D., retired therapist, and author, is a wife and grandmother, and an initiated Elder by Sage-ing International. After investing in all these roles and doing contemplative practices for 50 years, she is practicing the shift from role to soul—and authored her new book, The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul, which extends her shadow-work into midlife and beyond, and teaches aging as a spiritual practice.
