Psychedelic Therapy: Cutting-Edge Treatment Options, Clinical Research, Contraindications, Treatment Efficacy and Planning

Shannon Carlin, LMFT & Brooke Balliett, LMFT

The use of psychedelics as part of a structured therapeutic intervention is relatively new despite having been used for thousands of years for social, spiritual and physical health due to previous regulations that restricted their use in research and practice. Now, MDMA, Psilocybin and Ketamine offer the promise of exceptional efficacy for recovery from treatment resistant depression, PTSD, anxiety, Bipolar depression and substance use disorders. This presentation examines traditional indigenous practices, where many of the common elements of modern-day psychedelic therapy originated, alongside clinical research, treatment outcomes and practical practice for today’s therapist. Two clinicians experienced in using these substances in legal, clinical settings will explain treatment options, considerations for referrals, contraindications, and treatment planning.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify three or more psychological disorders that may benefit from psychedelic-assisted treatment.
  2. Describe the known efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapies compared to other existing therapeutic interventions.
  3. List two clinical symptoms that increase risk for negative outcomes when using psychedelics.

Shannon Carlin, M.A., LMFT has worked as a psychotherapist on 2 MDMA-Assisted Therapy clinical trials, provides ketamine-assisted therapy and is the Chief Director of Training and Supervision at the MAPS Public Benefit Corporation.  She is dedicated to service and creating pathways for all people to access the healing they seek.

Brooke Balliett, M.A., LMFT works as a researcher, therapist and supervisor for MDMA-Assisted Therapy via clinical trials in the US and Europe.  She has provided therapy on clinical trials using Psilocybin Therapy for Treatment-Resistant Depression. She co-founded the California Center for Psychedelic Therapy as a commitment to furthering access to psychedelic treatments to heal individuals and the communities surrounding them.
