Liberation Psychology:
Beyond Rhetorical Arguments and Technological Activism

Edil Torres Rivera, Ph.D.

While the use of liberation psychology principles has been linked to the social justice movement, in a number of cases the movement seems limited to criticizing mainstream counseling and the methodological processes we use to gain knowledge, in particular how data is obtained and analyzed. Very little has been studied about the underlying psychic and spiritual effects of colonial power. This presentation will focus on the impact of these powers and the application of liberation psychology to personal mental health through individual, family, and group therapy.

At the end of this presentation, participants will:

  1. Understand the concepts and principles of liberation psychology.
  2. Identify the purpose and use of problematization in a group process.
  3. Be familiar with the concept of “the reality of knowing” and its meaning within liberation psychology.

Edil Torres Rivera has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in multicultural counseling from the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He is a professor at the Wichita State University. His research interests are multicultural counseling, group work, liberation psychology, supervision, prisons, and gang-related behavior. Specifically, his primary research focuses on complexity and how indigenous healing techniques are a necessary ingredient when working with ethnic minority populations in the United States. His work has appeared in the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Addictions and other counseling and psychotherapy journals.
