Internal Family Systems: A Practice of Self-Compassion

Sayun Scotton, M.A., LMFT

This presentation and discussion introduces participants to the basic terminology and therapeutic value of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a deeply nourishing and transformational “parts-work” approach to healing. Originally developed by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D. over 30 years ago, IFS continues to evolve and gain momentum as an innovative evidence-based therapy model. Participants who are inspired to integrate IFS into their work will gain a fundamental understanding of how different parts interact with one another and hold their own lived history, wounding, patterns of protection and capacity to heal.  We will also explore Self-Energy — a core concept of IFS — that resides at the heart of this work and makes it unique to other parts-work paradigms.  At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the 5 basic assumptions and 4 goals of IFS therapy.
  2. Name the 3 common roles of parts and learn how to initiate and maintain a connection with them.
  3. Cultivate an understanding of “Self-Energy” and basic strategies to nurture it
  4. Gain a fundamental understanding of the concept of “blending/unblending” with parts.
  5. Comprehend the rationale for working with the protective system ("protectors") before working with shame and vulnerability ("exiles") in the system.
Sayun Scotton, M.A., LMFT (she/her) is certified in Internal Family Systems and EMDR, holds a Master’s in somatic psychology, and has trained in Hakomi, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Brainspotting, Trauma Resiliency Model, and Havening Techniques. She specializes in helping individuals heal from developmental and intergenerational trauma. Sayun’s passion for working with people along the body-mind-spirit continuum began over twenty years ago through the practice and study of meditation, reiki, yoga, and bodywork. As a mother and mixed-race therapist born in Vietnam and raised in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, she is moved to explore issues surrounding identity, otherness and belonging, disenfranchised grief, anxiety, shame, and maternal mental health. Sayun provides telehealth therapy services in California and New Jersey.
