LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Care: Now More Than Ever

While much progress has been gained for LGBTQIA+ people, today we face an alarming increase in anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation and hate crimes across the country. The recent onslaught of anti-LGBTQIA+ violence tells us any advancement is being notably threatened, creating understandable anxiety and concern for many of our LGBTQIA+ clients. The impact of such socio-political violence towards LGBTQIA+ clients will be examined in conjunction with possible complex trauma rooted in heterosexism, cissexism and intersectional oppression. Taking an affirmative therapeutic stance to directly address such traumas led by your empathic presence, theoretical knowledge and your role as LGBTQIA+ activist will also be addressed. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify the impact of current socio-political legislation and hate crimes as an assault to the LGBTQIA+ sense of self, self-identity and self-expression.
- Understand the harmful and traumatic effects of growing up in a heterosexist and cissexist setting on the psychological, social and emotional development of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
- Provide examples of what an LGBTQIA+ affirmative counseling environment entails and why this is crucial for effective treatment.
Thomas Mondragon, M.A., LMFT is an associate faculty member and founding instructor in both the LGBT Specialization and the Spiritual and Depth Psychology Specialization at Antioch University Los Angeles. He enjoys teaching classes in both specializations and in the general Master’s program that recognize the importance of diversity consciousness on the cultural, interpersonal, and intrapersonal levels. In addition, Thomas has a private practice in West Hollywood with a strong focus on gay-centered psychotherapy. He has presented at the national level with the National Conference of Race and Ethnicity, the Expanding the Circle Conference: Creating an Inclusive Environment in Higher Education for LGBTQ Students and Studies, and in the yearly conference of the Los Angeles Lesbian and Gay Psychotherapy Association.
