Meaningful Collaboration Between
Psychiatrists and Therapists

Leigh Goodrich, M.D. and Brittany Booth, M.D.

Do you ever get anxious about when, if, or how to best collaborate with a psychiatrist?  If you do, this presentation will help!  It addresses how to create meaningful collaboration between psychiatrists and therapists. Drs. Booth and Goodrich will use clinical case vignettes to examine ways in which effective and efficient communication between therapists and psychiatrists can improve the quality of care and optimize mental health outcomes for our clients.  We will explore how to determine when to reach out a psychiatrist and common barriers to meaningful communication between psychiatrists and therapists.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify when reaching out to a psychiatrist is appropriate to provide best clinical care for a client.
  2. Describe efficient and effective ways that therapists can communicate with psychiatrists.
  3. Identify common barriers to meaningful communication between psychiatrists and therapists.

Leigh Goodrich is a general adult psychiatrist with experience treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Her areas of special interest include anxiety and panic disorders, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She enjoys working with adolescent and young adult patients, and is passionate about student mental health within the transitional-aged youth (TAY, ages 18-25) population. Dr. Goodrich offers in-person appointments out of CalPsychiatry’s Orange County & Santa Monica offices, as well as telepsychiatry appointments.

Dr. Brittany Booth is a general adult psychiatrist seeing patients in the CalPsychiatry Encino and Westlake Villages offices and over telehealth. Her areas of special interest include women’s mental health, as well as mood disorders, anxiety, and OCD. She served as Chief Resident of the inpatient units at UCLA and as Chief Resident of the Women’s Life Center, where she gained specialty training in the treatment of mental illness during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Dr. Booth has specialty fellowship training in treatment-resistant mood disorders. She continues to work in the UCLA Maternal Mental Health program as a staff attending.
