Cannabis and Adolescents: What’s Lying in the Weeds?

Timothy Fong, M.D.

California passed the Adult Use of Marijuana Act in 2016 and there is now seven years of experience and clinical data to draw from in California on how cannabis has impacted adolescent physical and mental health.   This presentation will review the current cannabis landscape in California and a clear description of the true impact to adolescents of early and frequent exposure to cannabis.  Particular emphasis will be placed on how clinicians can improve screening, assessment and management techniques with clients and families to accurately determine how cannabis is impacting physical and mental health.

Educational Goal:

Strengthen knowledge and clinical skills for therapists in understanding, recognizing and managing the impact of cannabis use on adolescent physical and mental health.  At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Name three consequences of early and frequent exposure to cannabis for the developing brain.
  2. Apply screening and assessment techniques with adolescent clients and their families to clarify how cannabis impacts physical and mental health.
  3. Identify three treatment resources and strategies to reduce the harmful impact of cannabis on young people.

Dr. Timothy Fong is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA.  He is board certified in adult and addiction psychiatry. He is the co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program.   The program examines the clinical characteristics of gambling disorder in developing effective, evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies. Dr. Fong is also a member of the Steering Committee of the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids whose mission is to address the most pressing questions related to the impact of cannabis legalization through rigorous scientific study and discourse across disciplines.
