Neurodiversity-Affirming Assessment
and Counseling for Kids, Teens, and Adults with ADHD

Dr. Laurie Ferguson, PsyD

Your adult clients may ask if you think they might have ADHD, or a parent may wonder if their child or teen might be an ADHD'er. There has been a massive shift in our understanding of ADHD across the lifespan. Previous approaches focused on "fixing" and "curing," and we found this disease model simply doesn't work, leaving clients and families (and therapists) frustrated. In this presentation, we are shifting to using a client's strengths to develop supports so that clients with ADHD can reach their potential in school, college, work, home, and relationships.

Educational Goals:

Therapists will leave this training with tools to identify, assess, and support clients of all ages using a neurodiversity-affirming approach to ADHD.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify five myths about ADHD and why a neurodiversity-affirming approach is important.
  2. Participants will be able to use five strategies to create a neurodiversity-affirming experience for your ADHD client.
  3. Participants will be able to identify five ADHD advocacy tools.
  4. Participants will be able to identify five counseling and assessment approaches in ADHD.

Dr. Laurie Ferguson has been working in the mental health field supporting children, teens, families, and adults since 1996. She graduated from the APA-accredited Wright Institute in Berkeley. Training included an APA-accredited internship at The Children's Hospital in Denver, and a fellowship at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver (now called National Jewish Health). Training also included clinical positions at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and the USF Child and Family Center. Before attending graduate school, she was a mental health worker for the psychiatric units at the San Francisco County Jail and St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. Additional training included the SLOACCEPTance Project supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Dr. Ferguson is neurodivergent and has a neuro-spicy family, with personal experience advocating for family members of all ages.
