Fireside Chat Series

Sunday, April 19, 2026
10:30am-12:00pm

Online Via Zoom

LA-CAMFT's 3000 Club is pleased to introduce a new virtual Fireside Chat Series. This series offers an informal and intimate setting where pre-licensed members can engage in thoughtful conversation with licensed professionals about their career paths, areas of specialization, unique niches, and beyond.

Designed to be more interactive than traditional presentations and our organic monthly support groups, these fireside chats create space for discussion, curiosity, and questions. Pre-licensed members will have the opportunity to hear directly from experienced practitioners about how they found their professional direction, the clinical questions that shaped their work, and what it looks like to develop expertise in emerging or specialized areas of practice.

This event is part of LA-CAMFT’s ongoing commitment to supporting the professional development of pre-licensed members by providing opportunities to connect with experienced clinicians, explore potential specialties, and gain insight into the evolving landscape of the therapy profession.

Our first event in the series will feature Bob Roan, LMFT, LPCC who will introduce participants to the rapidly evolving field of cyberpsychology, with particular attention to the clinical realities of working with clients engaged in romantic relationships with artificial intelligence. My hope with this first event is to introduce pre-licensed folks to an emerging niche within our field and to be able offer a few more in the series this year!

Exploring the Niche of Cyberpsychology: Working with AI Romantic Relationships

with Bob Roan, LMFT, LPCC

As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into daily life, therapists may encounter clients forming meaningful emotional bonds with AI companions. This discussion will explore the psychological, relational, and ethical dimensions of these experiences, as well as what therapists may want to consider when working with clients navigating AI-mediated relationships.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Bob’s path into this unique specialty area, hear about the clinical questions shaping this work, and engage in open dialogue about how developing technologies may influence future therapeutic practice, including therapists’ ethical and societal responsibilities to contribute their expertise to the regulation, implementation, and integration of these technologies.

Presenter:

Bob Roan, LMFT, LPCC is a psychotherapist whose work explores the intersection of depth psychology and digital life. With a special interest in cyberpsychology, Bob studies the psychological and symbolic dimensions of our relationships with technology, particularly how Artificial Intelligence Romantic Partners can serve as mirrors to the unconscious and catalysts for self-awareness and growth. Bob’s career has been a journey of transformation—from early work in physics, technology, and business to a vocation rooted in human connection and meaning. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from The Johns Hopkins University, pursued doctoral studies in Physics, and completed an MBA from Harvard Business School. After years in the technology sector, he experienced a personal shift that led him to Pacifica Graduate Institute, where he earned master’s degrees in Mythological Studies and Counseling Psychology. His thesis, “Depth and Digital in Conversation: Practicing Marriage and Family Therapy Directly With Video Game Avatars,” examined the therapeutic potential of virtual worlds. Today, Bob integrates Jungian and mythological perspectives into his clinical work, helping clients cultivate awareness, authenticity, and emotional depth—both in their personal lives and in their evolving relationships with technology.
