Lighting the Way: Interventions for Teens and Their Families in Navigating Suicide Risk

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among youth ages 14-24, yet many clinicians receive limited training in the assessment and treatment of adolescent suicidality. Family involvement is essential in supporting recovery, but clinicians often lack practical tools to educate and engage caregivers. This workshop will provide attendees with a comprehensive intervention toolbox for working with suicidal teens and their families. Participants will learn to understand the suicidal mind through a driver-based lens, conduct suicide risk assessments, determine risk level, and implement effective intervention and safety planning strategies. Although the presentation focuses on adolescents, the clinical principles and interventions presented are applicable to clinicians working with suicidal clients across the lifespan. Attendees will leave with greater competence, confidence, and hope in treating suicidal individuals and their families.

Educational Goals:

Attendees will demonstrate competence in the assessment and treatment of suicidality in adolescents while effectively engaging and supporting families throughout the intervention process.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

1. Describe the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of the suicidal mind.
2. Differentiate suicide risk levels using a structured assessment process and identify corresponding clinical interventions.
3. Demonstrate the use of a family-centered safety and stabilization plan to reduce suicide risk and increase caregiver engagement.

Dr. Nicole Siegfried, PhD, CEDS-C (she/her) is the Chief Clinical Officer for Lightfully Behavioral Health and is a licensed clinical psychologist. She has worked in mental health for over 20 years and has served in national leadership positions for the past 10 years. She specializes in complex mental health disorders, eating disorders, and suicide. Nicole believes that recovery is possible for all individuals with mental health disorders, and that all individuals are capable and deserving of a life worth living.
